Kennett Square Borough Historical Commission
Protecting the architectural, natural and cultural historic resources within the Borough of Kennett Square.

The Kennett Square Historic District was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 and the Kennett Square Historical Commission was formed by Borough Council to protect, preserve and promote the historic resources within this district. The Commission’s number one duty is to review building permit applications and to advise, educate and promote compliance with the U.S. Department of Interior guidelines for the use of suitable materials, colors and styles for structures within the Historic District.

In addition, the Commission:

Participates in Chester County’s “Town Tours and Village Walks”;

Assists The Kennett Underground Railroad Center and Historic East Linden Project with some of their projects;

Works to document and plaque structures within the Historic District

Purchased 4 large bronze plaques to distinguish the boundaries of the Historic District;

Gives an award to a Kennett High School student who excels in history;

Presents an annual Historic Preservation Award for efforts to restore or maintain a structure in the Historic District;

Updated the Atlas of Historic Resources in the Borough of Kennett Square (2010);

Produces the annual Candlelight Holiday Home Tour to showcase historic homes, share their history and fund the above mentioned projects.

The Fireman's Auditorium was built in 1905 and housed a movie theater.  The building was torn down in 1965 to allow for a parking lot for the bank which sat at the corner of S. Broad and E. State Street.  The bank was demolished in 2007 and the Franklin Center was built there.  Click the link below to see a home movie from the 1940 Kennett Square Homecoming celebration.
